Tybee Island Beaches: Find Your Favorite Part of the Island

Tybee Island from Above

Tybee Island may be small, but its shoreline gives you several distinctly different ways to spend a beach day. You can search for shells near the northern tip of the island, settle into a quieter stretch of sand around Mid Beach, stay close to the pier and activity of South Beach, or head to the Back River side for marsh views, paddling, fishing, and memorable sunsets.

With more than three miles of sandy shoreline, Tybee's beach areas each have their own pace and personality. That means choosing where to stay isn't simply about getting close to the water, it's about finding the part of the island that fits the trip you're imagining.

Whether this is your first visit or Tybee is already one of your favorite stories to return to, use our guide below to get to know the island and find the beach area that feels right for your stay.

North Beach & the North End

North Beach offers a more relaxed introduction to Tybee, where beach days pair naturally with some of the island's best-known historic and educational attractions. The northern end of the island is home to the Tybee Island Light Station & Museum, Fort Screven, and the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, giving you plenty to explore when you're ready for a break from the sand.

This stretch is especially appealing if your ideal beach day includes long walks, searching the shoreline for shells, watching for birds or dolphins, and having a little more room to slow down. At the northern end, the Atlantic meets the mouth of the Savannah River, adding another layer to the scenery and wildlife viewing.

Why stay on the North End?

Choose the North End if you like a quieter atmosphere, easy access to local history and nature, and the idea of starting your morning near one of Tybee's most recognizable landmarks.

Mid Tybee Island Map

Mid Beach & Mid Island

Mid Beach sits between the quieter northern end of Tybee and the busier South Beach area, making it a natural choice for travelers who want a little of both.

This central part of the island tends to feel more residential and easygoing than South Beach while still keeping the rest of Tybee within convenient reach. It's well suited to leisurely beach days, morning walks, sandcastle building, wildlife watching, and simply settling into island time without needing to be in the middle of the busiest visitor district.

Why stay Mid Island?

Mid Island works particularly well if you value a central location. You can spend the day near Mid Beach, then head north or south to explore another part of Tybee without feeling far removed from either.

Back River

Turn toward Tybee's western side and the scenery changes. Instead of the open Atlantic, the Back River area looks toward tidal waterways, marshes, and nearby Little Tybee Island, creating one of the island's most distinctive settings.

Back River Beach is especially well known for its sunset views and is popular for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and nature watching. Parking and public access are more limited here than around the major oceanfront beaches, which helps give the area its tucked-away feel.

You'll also hear the term Back River used for a broader section of Tybee's western side, not simply the small beach at the southern end. Our Back River rental collection reflects that broader area.

Why stay near Back River?

Choose Back River if your favorite coastal views include marsh grass and tidal water, you want to end the day watching the sun sink over the western horizon, or you're drawn to paddling and fishing as much as traditional ocean beach days.

South Beach & the South End

Soth End Tybee Island Map

South Beach is Tybee's most active beach district and the place to stay if you like having plenty happening nearby.

The Tybee Pier & Pavilion anchors this part of the island, while restaurants, shops, and visitor activity cluster throughout the surrounding South End. Official island guidance describes South Beach as Tybee's busiest beach, particularly on summer weekends and holidays.

It's an easy fit for families and groups who like being able to move between the sand, pier, food, and island activity without traveling far.

Why stay on the South End?

Choose the South End if being close to the action is part of the vacation. You'll have South Beach nearby along with the pier and one of Tybee's most walkable concentrations of dining, shopping, and entertainment.

Above Savannah Georgia

Looking for Beaches Near Savannah, Georgia?

If you're planning a Savannah vacation and wondering where to find the beach, Tybee Island is the classic coastal escape from the city. Visit Savannah describes Tybee as “Savannah's Beach,” and the island is roughly 18 miles east of downtown Savannah, making it an easy addition to a Savannah-area trip.

That makes Tybee especially useful for travelers searching for beaches near Savannah, Georgia. You can pair historic squares and city sightseeing with Atlantic beach days, kayaking through coastal waterways, lighthouse views, and evenings by the water, all within the same vacation.

And while people often search for Savannah Georgia beaches, Savannah itself sits along the Savannah River rather than directly on the Atlantic. Tybee Island is the nearby barrier island where Savannah-area travelers head for a traditional ocean beach experience.

More Than an Ocean Beach: Little Tybee Island

Little Tybee island Log

Across the water from Tybee's southern side sits Little Tybee Island, an undeveloped barrier island accessible only by water. Despite its name, it is larger than Tybee itself and offers a much more remote coastal landscape of beaches, dunes, salt marshes, and wildlife habitat.

Kayak and boat excursions can take visitors into this quieter side of coastal Georgia, but conditions around Tybee's tidal waterways can change quickly. Visitors unfamiliar with the area are better served exploring with an experienced local outfitter or guide.
